And miles to go before I sleep…

I have always wanted to be as dedicated to my students as a teacher I had in the eighth grade when I knew that this was the career for me. For me education is the bringer of all knowledge and what leads the mind forward. I chose to title this particular entry “And miles to go before I sleep” because to me, this demonstrates all the knowledge and all the hours that I have put into my education in order to further my future student’s education. I know I have a lot more to learn, but learning feeds my inherent nature to

Professionally, I want to be able to present information to all of my students using all of the different learning styles. As history can be perceived in several different literacies, it is important that the students also see those literacies, and note that they are in line with their learning styles. Social Studies is not just memorization and mu hope is to demonstrate that to students to foster growth and alleviate the stigma associated with the typical lecture style teaching.

  1. It is such a blessing to know what we want to do. Being a teacher, we need to know how to help students to learn better and effectively. Students are unique in different ways and it is such important theory to keep in mind that students have different learning styles, even though they might have similar background and culture.

  2. Hi Jena! I’m excited to hear about your experiences and perspective as a future history educator. Do you have any ideas about how you will incorporate literacy and history together, or what you will be researching?

    1. Literacy in the history classroom can be demonstrated by the use of primary and secondary sources. Also, this may be the way that it was written as well. The language of the time period, for example the verbiage or the physical style in which they wrote. In some ways, students may analyze that verbiage that was mainstreamed within the time period, whether it was old English or specifically words that were used then that aren’t used today. Another research idea that students can research would be the use of language through the years. For example students could analyze the Roaring 20’s in relation to the way that language is used now.

  3. Jena, I enjoyed reading about the experiences that you have had that have helped encourage your desire to become a History teacher. Role models are such important parts of our lives, and I am glad to hear that you had such a wonderful role model who helped inspire you and encourage you to become what you are today. I think it is great that you want to be able to teach to all of the different learning styles. Do you have any ideas now of how you can do that?

    1. In some ways, learning styles can be facilitated through the interpersonal, mastery, understanding and self-expressive that we discussed in General Methods. Using this model also allows students to make the choice of what they want to focus on and what best benefits their personal learning styles. In the case of the lesson, there are several aspects that could be used, such as videos, different readings and levels of those readings, as well as getting students active using the carousel idea and potentially a debate. Do you have any other ideas on how I would use and facilitate students learning styles to gather their understanding of themselves as well as the information within the history classroom?

    1. I am not sure what you mean here Courtney. Do you mean in what ways can I use their learning styles in the classroom? If that is the case, I would use multiple modes of representation within the classroom according to whether the students are kinesthetic learners for example. In this case, manipulatives can be used to demonstrate ideas such as Native Americans, with construction paper to create an “authentic” headdress.
